Adopt-A-Child-Size and Support Services
Frequently Asked Questions
- How are families identified?
Families are referred to the program through a network of local
health, human service, educational, and religious agencies. These
agencies are invited to make referrals based upon their clientele,
services they provide, and resources available to their clients.
- What is included in the clothing packages?
Children receive an entire winter outfit complete with coats, hats,
gloves, boots (or
gift certificates for boots),
pants, shirts, undergarments. In addition, a book is included in each package.
See Outfits for a full discussion of the packages.
- How is the project funded?
Adopt-A-Child-Size is funded 100% by donations of money or clothing
from individuals, churches, businesses, groups, and agencies. The project
receives no government funds.
- Who staffs the project?
The project is staffed solely by volunteers. There is no paid
staff. A Board of Directors manages the organization and the
volunteer Executive Director is responsible for the day-to-day
operations.
- How can I get involved?
The need for support is rising. If you are interested in helping a
child in need, here are some simple ways to help:
- Purchase clothing for a child
- Establish the program as an annual activity at your church, group, or office
- At holiday office parties, ask each employee to bring an item of
clothing
- Hold a fundraiser
- Organize employees to purchase outfits for one or more children
- Provide printing services
- Provide office supplies
- Become a corporate sponsor
- Provide space for assembling and storing outfits
- Identify and link project to resources for wholesale purchasing of
clothing, books, or boots
- Provide office equipment

- Is it permissible to give a food basket for the
holidays?
Since we do not know each family's preferences in food, we suggest
purchasing gift certificates from a major food chain and including it
with the outfit. The family can select the food they need and
want, and we don't have to worry about spoilage.
Some donors provide food gift certificates on an annual basis for any
families in need.
- Can I give something to the parents?
Certainly you may. Just indicate this on the commitment form and
we will provide the necessary information to you. Sizes may be
difficult to obtain. Therefore, you may wish to consider personal
care items, books, and other items not size specific.
- Can I know who my child is?
Unfortunately, this is not permissible. We make every effort to
provide assistance in a confidential manner for the donor's and family's
protection. You may, however, receive the first name and gender
of your child.
Please refer to our "Guiding Principles"
for further explanation on our philosophy of helping.
-
May I add extras to my outfit?
Before making this decision, please refer to our "Outfits"
introduction. Some donors include extra books, games, crayons,
coloring books, or other items that can be shared with the family.
The best advice is to use reason and remember that there may be other
children in the family.
- Can I "adopt" a family of children?
Yes, we will be happy to identify a family of children for you.
If you have a size or age preference, please let us know when you send
the commitment form. We will call you after October 15th
with first names, gender, ages, and sizes.
- Can I "adopt" a child in my
community?
You certainly may. You only need to specify on the commitment
form and we will provide the information to you regarding the first
name, size, gender, and age after October 15th.
